Information on Bottle Tooth Decay

Starting dental care early is crucial for your baby’s healthy tooth development. Many parents may choose to give their babies a bottle to help them relax and fall asleep more quickly. However, if the liquid in the bottle contains sugary drinks, this habit can lead to bottle decay or early childhood caries.

Bottle decay refers to the decay of a baby’s first teeth due to feeding with a bottle. This condition typically arises when sugary drinks, such as fruit juice, milk, or formula, are given in a bottle and left in the mouth for a long period without being cleaned. The bacteria in the mouth combine with food residues, producing acidic substances that cause tooth decay.

Factors that contribute to bottle decay include frequent and prolonged contact of the baby’s teeth with sugary drinks. This usually happens when parents use a bottle to soothe or put their baby to sleep, a habit often repeated. Additionally, bacteria transmission from mother to child can also lead to childhood dental caries.

Measures to Prevent Bottle Decay:

  1. Avoid letting your baby sleep with a bottle.
  2. After each feeding, clean your child’s gums with a clean, damp cloth.
  3. After the baby’s teeth emerge, gently brush them using baby toothpaste.
  4. Between the ages of 3 and 6, brush your child’s teeth with a soft children's toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
  5. Help your baby clean their mouth after finishing the bottle.
  6. Transition your child to drinking from a cup as soon as possible.
  7. Schedule regular dental check-ups starting when the first teeth emerge.

Treatment for Bottle Decay

The treatment for bottle decay depends on the severity of the decay and the child’s age. Early detection can allow for the application of fluoride treatment or topical fluoride varnish during the white spot stage. In more advanced stages, treatments such as fillings, pulp therapy, or root canal therapy may be necessary.

It is essential to start dental care early and instil healthy habits, as this will have a positive long-term effect on your child's dental health.
