Sinus Lifting Surgery and Implant Treatment

A Method to Increase Bone Volume

Insufficient bone volume in the upper jaw is a common issue when preparing for implant treatment in cases of tooth loss. To address this, sinus lifting surgery is a procedure designed to increase the amount of bone above the sinus cavities, creating a suitable foundation for implants.

What is Sinus Lifting?

Sinuses are air-filled cavities in the skull that serve various functions, such as reducing head weight and aiding in sound resonance. Some sinuses are located near the teeth, making them significant for implant treatments.

When tooth loss occurs in the posterior region of the upper jaw (maxilla) and dentures or other prosthetics are not placed promptly, the distance between the sinus floor and the crest of the jawbone may decrease as the sinuses tend to downward. In such cases, a sinus lifting procedure is often required to augment the bone volume.

This procedure aims to increase bone density in the implant site and ensure successful implant placement.

Sinus lifting involves surgically elevating the sinus membrane to increase the bone volume in the sinus cavity.

Open Sinus Lift Technique:

    • Performed under local anaesthesia.
    • An incision is made along the gum line to access the sinus area.
    • Bone graft material is added to fill the cavity, which is then closed with stitches.

Closed Sinus Lift Technique:

    • Also performed under local anaesthesia.
    • Used when bone height is 4 mm or less.
    • The sinus floor is gently fractured using a special tool (osteotome set), the membrane is lifted, and bone graft material is added.

Complexity of Sinus Lifting Surgery

Sinus lifting is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia. A small opening is made inside the mouth to elevate the sinus membrane to the desired level. Post-procedure swelling may occur, but with proper medications and guidance, the recovery process is generally smooth and comfortable.

Post-Surgery Care:

  • Avoid chewing on the operated side during the first 24 hours.
  • Refrain from eating or drinking anything during the first two hours.
  • Be gentle when cleaning the nose, and keep your mouth open when sneezing.

Timing of Sinus Lifting and Implant Placement

If bone volume in the sinus area is significantly reduced, a waiting period of 4–6 months is required after sinus lifting before implant placement. However, if there is sufficient bone, sinus lifting and implant placement can be performed in a single session.

Bone Grafts (Bone Powder)

Bone graft materials, commonly used in implant treatments, may be derived from human, animal, or synthetic sources. These materials are processed using advanced technology to ensure compatibility with tissue and meet international certification standards.
