Breast Reduction Surgery - Reduction Mammoplasty

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure performed to address issues caused by excessively large breasts (macromastia, gigantomastia, or breast hypertrophy). This condition can lead to physical discomfort such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, postural issues (e.g., hunching), skin irritation under the breasts, and indentations from bra straps. Additionally, it can have a negative impact on daily activities and self-esteem.

The primary goals of breast reduction surgery are to:

  • Reduce breast size to a proportionate volume.
  • Reposition the nipple to an aesthetically appropriate location.
  • Achieve a lifted, aesthetically pleasing breast shape that maintains its form over time.

During this surgery, breast reduction and lifting are performed simultaneously.

Breast Reduction Surgery Duration and Techniques

The procedure takes approximately 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on breast size and the surgical approach. Surgeons commonly use one of the following incision techniques:

  1. Lollipop incision: Circular incisions around the nipple area extending vertically down to the breast crease.
  2. Anchor incision (inverted T): Similar to the lollipop incision with an additional horizontal cut along the breast crease.

The surgery involves removing excess skin and breast tissue, reshaping the breast, and repositioning the nipple. If necessary, liposuction may also be performed to address fat deposits in the sides of the breast area.

Who is Suitable for Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery may be appropriate for:

  • Young individuals with naturally large breasts (macromastia).
  • Women who experience breast enlargement and sagging after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight fluctuations.
  • Post-menopausal women who have gained weight and developed larger breasts.

The ideal candidates are those:

  • Aged 20 or older (exceptions are made for medical necessity).
  • Whose physical growth and hormonal balance have stabilised.

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

  • Relief from neck, shoulder, and back pain.
  • Improved posture and physical activity levels.
  • Enhanced self-confidence and ease in choosing appropriately fitting clothing.
  • Improved breast symmetry and proportionality.

Preparing for Breast Reduction Surgery

Before undergoing breast reduction surgery:

  • A breast ultrasound or mammogram is typically required.
  • A general surgeon may conduct an additional examination if needed.
  • Patients should avoid smoking for at least 3 weeks prior.
  • Avoid medications and supplements that thin the blood (e.g., aspirin, some herbal remedies) in the week leading up to surgery.

Post-Surgery Recovery and Care

  • Patients can usually walk 4–5 hours after surgery and are discharged the following day.
  • A non-wired sports bra should be worn continuously for the first month.
  • Return to daily activities is possible within 3–7 days.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activities for 6 weeks, after which sports can be resumed with doctor approval.

Additional Tips for Recovery

  • Swelling and oedema may persist for 3–4 weeks, with the final breast shape becoming apparent within 12 months.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for at least 1 month post-surgery to promote healing and minimise scar visibility.
  • Surgical scars fade significantly over 3–12 months, blending into the natural skin tone.

Annual Check-Ups

It is important to continue yearly breast ultrasounds or mammograms to monitor overall breast health.
